Please note: This article has not been written with the intent to disparage or condemn those who may have had, or have been associated with having an abortion. The aim here is to bring a clearer understanding on the subject so believers are fully aware of the scandalous deceptions revolving around this issue so they can help people make informed, biblical decisions.
Truth has been hijacked in order to hide the shocking reality of what’s really going on.
Sadly, statistics show that at least 65,000 abortions are performed every year in Australia alone – that’s 65,000 lives tragically lost before they had a chance to begin.
The word ‘abort’ means to terminate, and when something is terminated, it is brought to an end. So to terminate a pregnancy, quite literally means the baby’s life is brought to an end.
The question that cannot be ignored is this: Why has it become acceptable to end the life of an unborn child?
We’ve all heard the explanations behind the reasons, but as Christians, we must ask ourselves: How does God view abortion?
I’m not going to discuss the different theories of when it’s considered that a fertilised egg becomes a baby because I prefer to trust in God’s Word rather than man’s—after all, science has been wrong with many things before, such as; ‘the earth is flat’, ‘static (or stationary) universe’ or ‘the blood in your veins is blue’ to name a few.
Life begins at conception.
Psalm 139:13 For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
We wouldn’t adequately know right from wrong if it weren’t for God’s law. If left to our own devices, we would all individually decide on what we believe is right and wrong, according to our personal lifestyle and experiences.
Romans 7:7 …if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”
It’s well known that one of the Ten Commandments state that, ‘You shall not murder’ (Exodus 20:13), however the way this has been justified regarding abortion is to hold on to the belief that it’s not really a life.
If an unborn child is left untouched in the womb, what would happen after 9 months? You see, terms like ‘fetus’ or ‘blob of cells’ are used instead of ‘baby’ because it helps the mind to remove the thought that it is indeed a life, which in turn allows those involved to remain detached and clinical about abortion. This then gives parents a false sense of having a ‘clear conscience’ to go ahead with the termination, while it also assists the medical staff to believe it’s ethically acceptable to carry out the procedure.
The Bible tells us that God intricately created us.
Psalm 119:73 Your hands have made me and fashioned me…
Jeremiah 1:5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…
God knew us before He even began to form us in the womb! This shows that before we were even created, God had already planned to give us life and He formed us before birth, not during or after.
If a man murders a child, it’s justly seen as wrong and unacceptable—yet if this child was still in the womb and its mother decided she didn’t want it, then society’s view would change significantly ... in fact, it would completely back flip. In both scenarios, a life is taken, but because of cultural and societal beliefs and misconceptions, the viewpoint of these situations differ dramatically.
So why is it easier to accept taking the life of an unborn baby?
Here are a few reasons:
Silence - There's no noise, no cry for help because the baby is vulnerable and unable to be heard. It’s almost as if the act is done in secret and once complete, the mind erroneously hopes it can all be forgotten as though it never happened.
Defenceless - The baby cannot defend itself or speak up and therefore has no opportunity to put up a fight. In fact, the baby relies on its mother’s health and protection to develop and grow.
Hidden – An unborn baby is hidden in the womb and then later secretly discarded after abortion, so this makes a termination more appealing because the effects are kept unseen. This gives the illusion that the ordeal is gentle, clean and safe – however in actual fact, it’s horrific, messy and fatal for the child.
Discardable - Society agrees that it's ok to abort an unborn baby, therefore the majority choose to see it as a 'thing' rather than a 'life'. And when it’s seen like this, abortion can be readily sought and the body easily discarded.
The baby has no choice on whether it lives or dies. God created the womb to be the safest place in the world for an unborn child – but it’s now being viewed as a place that welcomes fatal invasion, if the mother permits.
To briefly address birth control medication: many people may not realise this, I myself was unaware of it until recently, but many birth control pills, most of which are classed as preventatives, can actually cause an abortifacient effect, which means it induces an abortion without you even realising it. As difficult as this may be to hear, we must be aware of the facts so that we can make moral decisions, as well as giving honest advice to others.
Now I want to stop here to stress that I understand that many women have felt immense pressure to have an abortion, or have even felt that they had no other option due to their own personal circumstances. And although this article is very straightforward in relaying the truth regarding abortion, it in no way implies that a woman who has had an abortion is eternally doomed. The Lord is merciful to those who repent, and He faithfully promises to not only forgive your sins, but He will also choose to forget your sins.
Hebrews 8:12 For I will forgive their iniquities and will remember their sins no more.
The Lord understands our pain and frustrations, and He also knows our inward thoughts and the intents of our hearts (Hebrews 4:12).
Psalm 34:18 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
If we cry out to the Lord with a repentant heart, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
God is the giver of life, therefore He is the only One who has the authority to also take it. But the Lord has graciously chosen to breathe life into us – He intricately and wonderfully formed us.
Psalm 139:14 I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
We did not give life to ourselves. Because God chose to give life, then who are we to see any life as unworthy or unimportant? Every life God has chosen to create, we should cherish and value.
Job 33:4 The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
God loved us so much that He chose to send His only Son to die for us so that we could be forgiven and have life with Him.
Romans 5:8 God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
There is no greater love than this – loving us even when we were at our worst; full of sin that is completely offensive and dishonourable to the Lord. The love of God is nothing short of extraordinary and astounding!
So in having the correct knowledge regarding this sensitive but crucial topic of abortion, let us use this information to treasure life – for every life is valuable and precious.
Job 12:10 The life of every living thing is in His hand, as well as the breath of all mankind.
