God's Word is filled with promises for His beloved. One such hope is that of refreshment. When we read the book of Psalms, we can often relate to David’s cries of weariness and broken-heartedness.
Many see this state as a negative thing but more often than not, a problematic season may be one of correction. The wise will understand this.
‘For the LORD corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights.
However, the Lord is faithful in sending us a time of refreshment. We can truly experience this, even during our time of suffering. Only God can achieve such a feat.
Psalm 23 1-4 reminds us that pure refreshment comes, even through our darkest days.
Psalm 23 1-4
The Lord is my shepherd; I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
There are many more promises regarding weariness:
- God will “refresh the weary and satisfy the faint.” (Jer 31:25)
- God’s Word refreshes the soul.(Psalm 19:7)
- God will bring times of refreshing for those who turn from sin. Pray & repent of known sin without delay. (Acts 3:19)
- Godly fellowship refreshes the spirit (1 Cor 16:18, 2 Cor 7:13)
Sometimes we believe that our suffering is worse than others or that those around us don’t understand what genuine heartache is. The truth is that every person on this earth will face a time of suffering, whether it’s because of their actions (or others), or perhaps it’s a circumstance beyond anyone’s control.
There is a story of a young father-to-be who was pacing back and forth; nervously wringing his hands in the hospital waiting room while his wife was in labor. Finally, a nurse opened the door and said, “Well, sir, you have a little girl.”
He heaved a sigh of relief and said, “I’m glad it’s a girl. She’ll never have to go through the agony I’ve gone through tonight!”
The Lord has given us everything we need to rise and experience pure joy and peace despite our current circumstance. He has given us His Word, His Spirit and like-minded believers to encourage one another through the storm.
If you are feeling overwhelmed right now, I pray for encouragement during your battle. You have the victory in Jesus Christ.
