Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the Lord.” Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord. Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”
Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.
This is the story of two brothers and their attitudes toward God. Abel`s offering pleased God, but Cain`s did not. Cain was angry with God for not receiving his offering.
God warned Cain that if he didn't examine himself and his attitude, it would lead to further trouble. Satan was crouching at his door waiting to pounce.
God asked him a couple of questions trying to get his attention and help him to humble himself and acknowledge his bad attitude toward his brother and God.
First question: “Why are you angry?”
When we become angry over anything, that`s the first question we need to ask ourselves and be honest about it, examine ourselves.
Second question: “Why has your countenance fallen?”
You only need to look at the face of someone who is angry to know they have a problem, it`s all over their face.
Then God tried to get his attention by reasoning with him, asking. “If you have done well, won`t you be accepted?”
In other words, if you have done the right thing you will know there is nothing to be angry about, so why are you angry, it really is a give away. You are angry because you have a bad attitude and won`t humble yourself and simply admit it and ask for help. Too proud!
And if you humble yourself, you will acknowledge that you have not done the right thing by giving with a bad attitude.
God loves obedience better than sacrifice. Don`t bring your offerings to the Lord if you have ought against anyone, God will not accept it, He knows what`s in your heart.
Sin wants to rule over you, Satan is waiting to take you captive. He sets the traps and we sometimes fall in. God tries to help us, but He won't if we refuse to repent and ask for help.
God knows the outcome of our wrongdoing. How merciful and gracious of Him to offer to help Cain, yet Cain obviously refused to take God`s advice because we see he ended up killing his brother.
Sin, if left unchecked, will lead to worse sins. Don`t be so stubborn as to stop yourself from repenting before God and asking His help to overcome.
Human nature has not changed one bit, we, all of us, are wicked and beyond hope unless we learn to acknowledge our sin, repent before our God and ask for His help. He wants to forgive us and help us to be overcomers in this life. Allow God to help you!
