1 John 2:1-2
My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.
We are not to sin, but if we do, we can go to the Father in repentance, asking Him to forgive us of our sin and He will cleanse us.
The Test of Knowing Him
1 John 2:3-6
Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
If we know Jesus, we will keep His moral laws and live a life that is pleasing to our heavenly Father who is holy!
We are to live as Jesus lived, to daily follow in Jesus' footsteps, endeavouring to be true believers and imitate Him in our actions and our works and our words - always speaking the truth in love.
Love your brother. Love as Jesus loves, holding no malice toward anyone. Even if you may have been wrongfully treated, bear it with humility and forgive and allow our just God to deal with the situation.
Walk in The Light
1 John 2:9-11
He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
We are to walk in the light, and we show this by loving the brethren. If we say we love God, then we will love others as He does, otherwise we are still in darkness.
Don`t Love the world
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
Don`t love this world or anything in it. We show that the love of the Father is not in us if we love this world.
The lust of the flesh. (Desiring things that gratify our flesh, lusting after them.)
The lust of the eyes. (Coveting and accumulating things, bowing to the god of materialism.)
The pride of life. (Being obsessed with status or importance. Thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought to think.)
Children of God
1 John 2: 28-29
And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming. If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him.
God would rather have us be humble, self-controlled servants with a generous attitude.
It is possible to live a life as if you are pleasing the Lord, when in actual fact you are harbouring worldly attitudes in your heart. Let's examine our own selves.
God knows our hearts.
