And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.
Matthew 24:12 ESV
In prior verses it is established that there will be war, famine, pestilence, betrayal and global persecution of Christians. Because of such events, there will be an increase in lawlessness. This refers to both the earthly physical law and also God's moral law.
Now, there is already a sense of lawlessness in this world in accordance to the rules and laws set by the government e.g. speeding, downloading illegal music and movies etc. However, lawlessness in this aspect will only increase in both frequency and severity. An example can be: in times of famine, it will be a common occurrence for one to steal a loaf of bread or even murdering someone to attain it.
There is also a sense of lawlessness in accordance to going against God's moral law. Many things that God has established as abominable will be deemed as pure, right, just or simply viewed that 'there is nothing wrong with it' e.g. lying, divorce, stealing, sexual immorality etc. Many things that God has deemed as good, will be perceived as evil e.g. holiness, true justice etc.
When there are such perilous times facing humanity, it is only natural for mankind to be thinking about one's self. And to protect one's worldview, safety, peace, comfort, status quo, conscious etc, it is only natural for mankind to justify selfish and drastic actions of lawlessness.
"The love of many will grow cold." This is only natural for one who is not a Christian and does not possess the Spirit of God. When one is selfish, all other evil things will come with it. No one will be thinking about others. There will be no sacrificial and selfless love, but an egotistical love for one's selfish desires and needs.
This sign of the end is not only true today, but will increase and ever continue to increase until Christ's return. We, as Christians, need to understand that these things will happen and that we need to continue to reflect the love of Christ even in the midst of perilous times.
