Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror and thought negative things about your physical appearance?
As you stare at your reflection, you see imperfections/things you dislike about yourself and these thoughts make you feel insecure, sad, angry, and for some, it causes depression.
A recent study has found that 89 percent of Australian women are opting to cancel plans, job interviews and other important events - simply because of how they look.
When I see statistics like that, it makes me realise just how little confidence and security people have about themselves. This problem is growing in society and cannot be solved on its own.
If we truly believe what we read in the Bible, then God is/should be our security. He is our stronghold, our solid rock to stand upon, our lamp unto our feet. He guards our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus. Amen! (Philippians 4:1, Philippians 4:7, Psalm 18:2, Psalm 119:105)
When we decide that we look unpleasant, what we are really doing is criticising how He has created us and basically saying to God, "You could have made me better". It is such an easy thing we all can struggle with day to day, but with God's help, we can keep our thoughts on things that are good. (Philippians 4:8)
Today, people are told they are "beautiful because that's how God created you to be". Now, while that is true, our image should not be our main focus.
What is more important than beauty on the outside?
The answer is beauty on the inside.
Being a beautiful person on the inside is far more important than how you look on the outside, because our bodies are only temporal while we are here on earth. Therefore, a better focus should be to make sure we have our heart right with God and filled with His love (2 Corinthians 5:1).
So, how do we become a beautiful person if our hearts are so desperately wicked? (Jeremiah 17:9)
"Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing."
- John 15:4-5
Only in Christ can we begin to be a godly person. We are such a sinful and unholy people, but when we are saved by God's grace, then we will have the capacity to have true beauty inside of us to express and share the Gospel with everyone around us.
"In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."
- Matthew 5:16
This world is getting darker and the time is drawing near ever so quickly before our Lord returns. Therefore, let the light shine through us to show others Christ's love for them.
What a blessing it is to be able to be used for God's glory and His Kingdom.
