"For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
-2 Timothy 1:7
God has given us a gift by giving us a spirit that is the opposite to a fearful spirit, and that is a spirit filled with courage.
Powerful courage, powerful love and powerful self-control. Without God, we would not be able to practice these things.
An aspect of having courage is to be unashamed. But unashamed of what?
If we read the next verse, 2 Timothy 1:8 says "Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God."
This scripture clearly tells us that we are not to be ashamed of Jesus Christ. Not only that, but we are meant to share in the sufferings with our brothers and sisters in Christ who are suffering for His sake. This can only be done with the power that only God can give us to be able to endure whatever you may go through in life.
No matter what sufferings we may be going through, we need to stand firm on the rock, the solid foundation that we know. We need to be continually learning from the bible and applying it in our everyday lives.
We must realise that our minds play an important role in how we go about our daily activities. For example, if our minds are thinking about secular things all day, such as our career, sports, food, family and we're not renewing our minds by spending much time reading the Word of God, then we can expect to be depressed, anxious, fearful, unsatisfied, unholy, ungodly, prideful and unwise people. But, if we renew our minds each day by reading the bible, praying and spending that intimate time with God, thinking of things that are holy, righteous and good (Philippians 4:8), then we will see how much this will help us improve our daily walk with Christ.
Have faith in God, for He will give us the courage that we need to stand firm though our sufferings, through our trials and through our persecutions that we may face when we are standing for Him.
