"...you thought that [God] was one like yourself..."
Psalms 50:21 ESV
Christian, by now, you may have many ideas about God, who He is and what He is like. The question that needs to be asked is: how do you know what you know about God is true?
Many equalise sermons by their favourite preacher as truth, however the only absolute truth is what is written in God's word - the bible. If the preacher and the bible contradict, one of them is wrong and it is not the bible.
Acts 17:11 desribes a group called the Bereans who would search the scriptures to confirm what Paul was saying was true or not when he was preaching. We should be doing the same thing when one presents an idea or attribute about God.
When reading through the entire bible, we need to be mindful that we do not take passages out of context and also minimise misintepretations by verifying Scripture with Scripture (the bible will not contradict).
There are many who say:
- My God is like this...
- My God never does this...
- My God does this...
It is crucial to note that if our thoughts about God contradicts the bible, it is wrong regardless of our beliefs or how passionate we are about it.
Let us be diligent in ensuring our understanding of our Creator is based on what He has said about Himself. After all, it would be fearful entering judgement day and then finding out the One judging your eternal after-life is not the same one you worshipped.
