"Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ..."
Philippians 3:8 ESV
Paul, a great role-model of the faith, had a scale. On one side of the scale was Christ. On the other side, was everything else ranging from his reputation, health and even his life. From the verse above, can you guess what weighed more? Which was more valuble?
The answer is Christ. You could even say, the scale didn't just tip to Christ, it broke off!
To Paul, Christ was everything.
Paul counted everything else as rubbish. This indicates that this was not a mere preference for Jesus over his own reputation amongst other things. Rather, Paul would (and did) cast away his life without a second thought if it meant knowing Christ.
After all, who would give rubbish a second thought? To Paul, all else was a liability.
Christian, Paul's example is more than a mere guide. Replicating his attitude is fundamental for those who call themselves Christians.
"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple."
Luke 14:26 ESV
Paul simply was living the life Christ had called him to live. Everything else, in comparison to Christ, was worthless.
Christian, do you see Christ as the pearl of great price? Do you see Him as your Beloved?
Do you esteem anything else in life as something that holds value? Or do you count it like rubbish in comparison to Jesus Christ?
