"They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved."
2 Peter 2:19 ESV
This verse refers to specifically to false prophets, however this is applicable to all people.
"For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved." Someone is considered an alcoholic when they are 'enslaved' or addicted to alcohol. To aid this person to stop, this may require rehabilitation or other forms of therapy. This person may not even want to stop because they are simply enslaved to alcohol.
Let us look at what the bible says about man's heart:
"“The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?"
Jeremiah 17:9-10 NKJV
What is the cause for our heart to e desperately wicked? Sin. For this reason, as Paul puts it "...no one seeks for God" (Romans 3:11). This is because sin takes them away from wanting to know the Almighty God who is good, holy and just (as sin is the opposite and deserves judgement).
Unlike those who break free from alcohol via different means of therapy, the power of sin, which causes the hearts of all mankind to be desperately wicked, cannot be broken by man's own will and strength as it has infected the hearts of all completely. Only the grace of God can free mankind from the curse and effects of sin.
Praise God for His amazing grace! For without Him, we certainly would willingly choose the path that leads to destruction as we lead a life of selfishness bound by sin, rather than living for and pleasing God. Prior to conversion, we were overcome by sin as we were slaves to sin. But no longer, for we are bondservants to righteousness.
